Within the security system industry, remote access to camera systems is quickly becoming an industry standard. Homeowners and business owners alike want to be able to monitor their cameras from anywhere. After all, security cameras, in most cases, are primarily used for times when people are not present. Recent advancements in technology have made remote access to security cameras possible and affordable; however, homeowners and business owners usually opt for different types of camera systems.

IP Address

All security cameras that are remotely accessed have an IP address, which is either static or dynamic. As their names indicate, static IPs do not change, but dynamic ones do. Dynamic IP addresses are changed periodically by one’s internet service provider (ISP). These addresses might be altered daily, weekly or monthly.

For most users, including small businesses, a dynamic IP address meets the needs they have. Homeowners and owners of small businesses will not notice a difference in their service, regardless of the type of IP address they use. Since dynamic IP addresses are less expensive than static ones, dynamic IP addresses are the more common type of IP address.

Companies that maintain their own servers are the types of clients that opt for a static IP address. These businesses are typically established, large companies, which can afford the additional cost of a static IP address. The static address allows security personnel to monitor cameras from anywhere seamlessly. The security system has a designated place, or IP address, in its company’s servers. Every time personnel log into the security camera system, they will access the same address. If these companies were to rely upon dynamic IPs, then their service might be interrupted when the IP address changed.

DNS Forwarding

People who cannot afford a static IP address can use DNS Forwarding as a work-around solution. The issue with a dynamic IP address is that it changes, and service might be interrupted if the correct IP address is not known. A DNS forwarding service constantly monitors the IP address that is used, and updates the IP address when necessary. When a user logs into the security camera system, the DNS service knows which IP address is currently in use and will send the user to the correct one. Thus, service is uninterrupted from a practical standpoint. This is not a perfect solution, but most people find it satisfactory.

Bandwidth

The final consideration, which is a hidden cost of remote access security camera systems, is the bandwidth required to use them. There are two main considerations. First, the security system must be able to send and receive large amounts of data, since it will be sending videos. This is usually not an issue, since many people have high-speed internet connections. Secondly, the user must be able to receive large amounts of data, since videos will be streamed. For central monitoring services, a high-speed internet connection will satisfy this need. However, individual users, who want to access their security cameras via an iPhone, Blackberry or other mobile device, will need a fast wireless service. The company providing a security system can provide guidance concerning the amount of bandwidth necessary.

When selecting a remote access security camera system, residential and commercial customers will choose different configurations. The IP address, DNS forwarding service and bandwidth can all be factors that influence the total cost of a security system. Any security system provider should be able to walk customers through these decisions.

There are a lot of different myths that are going around about IP surveillance cameras. Most people are not even aware of some of the myths, so a couple of the more common ones are listed below to help you uncover the truth about IP cameras.

DVRs Are the Best in CCTV Technology

Not only do people assume that the digital video recorder is one of the best in technology, but they also assume that it is an all digital technology. In fact it is neither one of those things. There are a lot of advantages to the digital video recorders when they are compared to the video cassette recorders. You won’t have to worry about changing any tapes; the image quality will remain consistent throughout the video and enhanced searching capabilities to make it a breeze. However, you will still have all of the analog cables, which in turn will distort the images and cost you a lot more to run them through a facility. IP surveillance systems have all of the advantages that a digital video recorder can bring to the table and then some.

Scalability

IP surveillance cameras are able to scale from one camera to thousands with the increments of a single video camera. In the digital video recorder world there is jumping between 16 channels. However, when you have an IP camera you will be able to see any frame at any moment without having to worry about any limitations.

Cost Effectiveness of the Infrastructure

The whole infrastructure is a lot more cost effective than their counterparts. The majority of facilities are already wired with the infrastructure you need, so there is no need for any additional wiring to install your IP camera system. You only need one type of network to be able to connect all of your data, video and voice together, which makes the whole management system operate more efficiently and it is more cost effective.

Remote Access

You will be able to access your data from anywhere around the world when you have an IP camera in place. As long as there is a computer around you will always be able to see what is going on around your property. The whole feed will also be secure, so you will never have to worry about anyone hacking into your video and making any changes.

Total System Cost

The cost of the system is going to be far less expensive than that of the other systems out there. When you consider how expensive it is to install an IP camera, it is a lot less than that of their counterparts. Beyond just saving money on your installation, the maintenance costs will be less than others on the market as well, so you are saving money all around.

More than Just a System

The digital video recorder is not really your end solution, even though a lot of people think that it is. It is more of a milestone along the way to developing your closed circuit television technology. As there are more and more accessibility features for the digital video recorder technology, it is going to become more and more outdated. IP surveillance technology is rising in the ranks to be the fastest and most reliable digital video recorder technology out there. There is such a broad range of differences between the IP surveillance cameras and the digital video recorders that it is hard to understand all of the changes at this point in time.

Whenever there is a video ground problem that occurs, it is easy to see the problems on the video monitors. It will look almost like there is a horizontal band that runs across the video monitor and slowly makes its way up and down the screen. It may be that you will hardly notice the bars at all, but it could also be so bad that you will notice the video monitor breaking up the picture to the point where you will not be able to detect anything. If the video camera ends up in a line-locked function, the bars will end up staying in one place. However, the picture is still going to be obscured and customers are going to complain because they will not be able to see what is going on.

The underlying source for the 60 cycle power bar will come from the local grounds of the power industry in an attempt to help balance the power grid. Anywhere you find that the 60 cycle power supply is utilized, you are going to notice that there is a local ground wire that is attached to the power grid in an effort to be able to return all of the unbalanced current into the ground. If you take a look at all of the breaker boxes, you are going to notice that there is a ground wire that helps to connect the device to the earth ground. Each and every outlet that is installed properly will have a direct connection into the ground.

Not all of the grounds are equal to one another. The grounding in one building is more than likely going to have a completely different voltage level than that of another building, even if it is within the same location because there is always the potential for an uneven current flow based upon the different power loads out there.

You may be wondering exactly how it is that the 60 cycle power bar ends up inside of your video. If you take a coaxial cable and connect it into a monitor or other piece of video equipment, that plug will go into the main power for the 60 cycle bar. This ends up resulting with the coaxial cable becoming grounded, which in turn creates a ground loop. Whenever there is a difference in the voltage between the two points of a current flow you will end up getting an induction within your video signal.

Even though it may be easy to be able to measure the differences between all of the different voltages, you need to make sure that you are doing it correctly. Take the video cable and disconnect it at the monitor. Using your voltmeter you can measure the incoming video cable along the two shields and see just how much of a difference there is between all of the cords.

A solution to put an end to your problem is to avoid connecting both ends of your video cable into your local ground. It is possible to be able to ground one end of the cable without having to worry about inducing the entire ground loop current. Whenever you are running a line of coaxial cabling from one building into another, it is perfectly acceptable to be able to run the installation through the connection points, but you do need to avoid allowing your contact points to come in contact with one another or on the local ground.

If you have a coaxial connector that is laying in a cable try or a box, you don’t want to let the wire accidentally slip and come in contact with the ground. You should use tape on the wire to help prevent the occurrence of any accidental grounding. Try to avoid attaching the camera onto any building or structure that will end up being grounded. It is imperative to remember that there is already grounding between the camera and the other end of the coaxial cable through the monitoring equipment.

It is possible to reduce the event of a ground loop problem by working to reverse the AC plug on the transformer that is used to help power up the camera. You can also reverse the VAC power connection to the cameras through the use of a ground loop. However, this technique is not going to work on all of the DC powered cameras, so you have to keep that in mind right from the very beginning when trying to run your ground wires.

Able to function in the same manner as any other wireless security camera, outdoor wireless security cameras are a great choice for home security. They can record videos and store them into a file format for later viewing on your computer or the Internet. The main difference between an outdoor camera and any of the others on the market is that they are able to withstand the element of abuse. Generally, they are waterproof and able to handle tiny objects that are thrown their way. Anything that may randomly hit the camera from being thrown around by wind will not restrict the functionality of this rugged camera.

A lot of people believe that the best outdoor security camera is the bullet cameras. They have been given their name because of their rugged housing that resembles a bullet. Since they are sealed pretty tight, you can use them indoors or outdoors. You will not have to worry about any wires because they are wireless. Ease of installation is another fabulous benefit for these cameras. Rain, snow, wind or hail the elements will not be able to do any damage to this weatherproof camera.

If you want to use an outdoor wireless camera, you may want to look into the dome camera. Dome security camera can be used inside of your home as well as outside. The surrounding dome on the camera gives it the added protection that it needs for outside use. When you purchase one with an armor dome, it will be able to uphold a sledgehammer attack on it. This can prove to be an extremely valuable tool for preventing any issues with criminals who like to disable security cameras before entering into your property.

A C-mount camera is able to be customized more than a lot of the other cameras on the market today. However, they need to be mounted on a special outdoor housing to be an effective camera for outdoor use. This specific housing allows the C-mount cameras to be weatherproof, but it does not allow them to be able to see in the dark. There are some outdoor cameras that possess the pan/tilt/zoom function. This is largely in part because of the space that they need to monitor when compared to an indoor security camera.

Having an outdoor security camera in place can help save you a lot of time and hassle in the event of a criminal making their way around your home. You will be able to have the peace of mind and security in knowing that you will not have to worry about your belongings. The outdoor wireless camera system will help protect you and your family from an unwelcome attack on your property in no time. When you add in the weatherproofing and vandal resistant housing there is nothing that can stand in the way of your safety. Never before has it been so easy to protect your home from an unwanted intruder. Simply check out all of the outdoor wireless cameras that are available on the market for you to bring home today.

Home Surveillance System Installation

Once you are aware of how to install a home surveillance system, you will be able to maneuver the cameras around to be able to suit your needs. It is not as difficult as you might think to be able to install the cameras yourself. The hardest part of the whole installation is running the cables to where your monitors are located. However, with just a few simple tools you will be able to accomplish this with ease. Every home should have their own home surveillance system installed in today’s day and age. The systems are more affordable than ever and when they are set up properly they are going to last for years to come.

1. Select the area that you want to be monitored by the cameras. The majority of people tend to use the entry way into the home as their main monitoring point of focus, but the choice is entirely up to you and where you think the cameras will be best suited.

2. Take the mounting brackets and screw them into your wall, so this way the camera will be able to be angled to whichever direction you see fit. You can make sure that they are positioned directly at the entryways in your home without any worries or hesitations. Drill a hole underneath the mounting bracket to be able to run your coaxial cable through it.

3. You are then going to begin feeding the coaxial cable into the wall until it reaches the designated area where you are going to place your monitor. There are numerous options for where you can choose to run the coaxial cable and the choice is up to you. It can be from your basement up through the floor into another room where the monitor is located on an opposite side of the home. The end choice is yours and yours alone, so make sure you decide where you are placing everything to ensure that installation is a breeze.

4. Attach your coaxial cable to the back of the camera and then you are going to proceed to mount the camera onto the bracket. Then you need to attach the coaxial cable into your monitor and take the time to adjust your camera angles so that you have maximum viewing capacity. Take the time to slowly move your camera around until you come up with the perfect viewing angle for your new security system.

5. If you are planning on recording any movement on the cameras, you are going to need to hook up a recorder. In order to install a recorder to your camera, you simply need to run a coaxial cable from the monitors output and into the recorders input. You are going to need a tape that is designed specifically for your type of surveillance recorder.

As you can tell, installation is not all that difficult, but think about how much it is going to bring into your home. You are going to have the peace of mind in knowing that your home is going to be protected for the long run and that you won’t have to worry about losing precious items in side of your home. A home surveillance system is the perfect option to be able to deter any criminals who are contemplating coming around your home for their next heist. You can be prepared and ahead of the game with your new security system.

One of the best things about using a fake security camera is the amount of money it will cost you. You can purchase a dummy camera that looks almost identical to that of a real one for a fraction of the cost. Since there is no installation involved, you will not have to spend anything out of pocket for that either. All of these things combined help to make this one of the most affordable measures around.

When installed correctly, these cameras are extremely effective in their abilities to deter any criminal activities from the area. The individual is not going to know whether the camera is real or not, which only makes them scared of being caught on camera. It is imperative that you don’t let anyone know you are purchasing a dummy camera and not the real thing. Otherwise, you may end up jeopardizing just how effective the camera is going to be in the long run.

Small business owners, homes and even small offices can benefit from this type of technology more than a large business or corporation. The fear of being caught on tape would help to keep everyone within the legal confines of the law, all while saving you a lot of money in your pocketbook.

Disadvantages of Owning a Dummy Security Camera

If you are worried about a breach in your security, this camera is not going to be able to do the job adequately enough for you. A fake camera is only going to scare away those who are worried about being identified on camera. Hardened criminals or those who could care less about going to jail will not even both to think twice about robbing you and committing the crime. They figure they have nothing to lose so why not risk it all. In these particular cases, the fake camera is not going to make a difference one way or another. The attitude of the criminal is already set in motion and there is little that you can do to prevent them from attacking your home or office.

Whenever there is a mishap such as this, the fake cameras would be useless to you and the police department because there is no recording coming from them in the first place. You should also be concerned with the possibility of others finding out that your security camera is not real. In small businesses, it is relatively easy for information to leak out and run the risk of an internal threat that you are now going to have to deal with. There is always the possibility of an internal person giving information to a potential robber to help plan out a robbery based upon their information and the fact that your security camera is a fake.

The best time to use a dummy security camera is in an interim situation. Only use them for a short amount of time due to lack of funding or inability to install a professional security camera. As soon as possible, you should implement a regular security camera into your establishment or home. Trying to save money for an extended period of time by sticking with this type of technology is not exactly the smartest business decision around. The money you could save on buying this particular security system would be outweighed substantially by the amount of money you would lose in the event of a burglary.

If you have made the decision to implement a security system into your home or business, you are not going to want to make it the center of attention and have it be the first thing that people notice. Security systems should be noticeable to the average burglar to help deter theft and make them think twice before robbing your home or business. However, you don’t want to make it obvious that you have a security system in place and make it stand out or ruin the outside appearance of your living environment. There are a few simple steps that you can put into play to make your system as simple as possible, as well as make it more appealing to the eye.

Centralize Your Power

The last thing that you are going to want is to have your security system plugged into a local wall outlet. Take the time to invest in a multichannel power supply and make sure that all of your power is running into that one box. When you do this it is going to allow your camera to be able to pull all of the power it needs, as well as free up any additional outlet space. You can also try running your Cat5 cable directly into the switch. Then you would have the switch send out one cable in the back of the unit and run that cable into your digital video recorder.

Color Coordination

Take careful consideration of the colors that are around the area that you are planning on placing your security camera. Make sure that your cameras and the cables are not going to clash with their surroundings because this is only going to make the system stand out above everything else in the area. The whole point of a security system is to compliment the areas around it, not to contrast with all of the surroundings and stick out like a sore thumb. You have to remember that when you make the decision to install a security camera you are also doing some form of interior design, so every detail is going to count when it comes to security camera installation.

Going Stealth

For numerous years the nanny cameras and covert cameras have been one of the most popular choices among residential customers around the world. You will never know what these cameras are hiding amongst. It could be a smoke detector or a camera. Who knows exactly what you have going on around your property. There are numerous options available for you to choose from when it comes to a security camera, including pens and clocks to name a few.

There are a lot of people who have avoided installing a security system around their home because they did not want anyone to see what it was going to look like. They thought that it would be an unattractive addition to their home, so they figured the best thing to do was avoid installing one altogether. Security systems are not designed to be attractive, but they are designed to make sure the property is safe and secure. However, if you follow the aforementioned steps you should be able to come to some sort of balance between the two mediums.

Instead you are going to be able to see what is going on around your home or business, as well as any other place you choose to monitor. You will be able to set your digital video recorder to allow you to view the footage online, but only if that is one of the options that your digital video recorder is equipped with.

Step-by-Step Directions

1. First you are going to begin by setting your digital video recorder up in the location that you want it to do all of the recording. Each one of the digital video recorders will come with different options for setting it up, so you are going to want to make sure that you follow all of the directions that came with your digital video recorder. The instructions will either be printed on the box or within a manual inside of the box.

2. Open your web browser and proceed to the manufacturer’s website that is located on your digital video recorder box or printed within the manual. This site will be the one that you need for setting up your digital video recorder to be able to view it online. Every digital video recorder will have a different website that you are going to have to go to in order to view the recordings and save them for later viewing.

3. Since it is your first time accessing the site, you are going to have to click on the new user or register icon to begin the set-up process. You will need to enter in your name, address and other miscellaneous information to get your account all set up and ready to use. Next, click where it says digital video recorder information and enter in all of the information about your digital video recorder.

Once you have everything entered into the system it is going to make sure that your digital video recorder will be sending everything to the appropriate site, which is where you are going to need to go to be able to view all of your data. This information is specific to your digital video recorder and you get everything you need during the initial set up phase.

You are also going to need the antenna number that can be found on the digital video recorder, as well as the serial number that you can find on the box. There may be additional information which you are going to need as well, which will be listed in your instruction booklet. There is the possibility that you will need the personal ID number on the digital video recorder, which is different from the serial number. You may also have to provide your location to finish the set up process.

4. Go to where it says test and make sure that your digital video recorder footage is coming through correctly. It should reveal what you are currently recording through your security digital video recorder. You will know if you have everything set up correctly based on what you are able to see on your test screen. As long as you are able to see what you want then you can click finish to exit the screen for setting everything up. If you do not see what you want on the screen, you are going to want to reposition your digital video recorder and keep retesting it until you are satisfied with the results.

5. Go to the site and login with your user name and password that you set up in the beginning under your personal information section to be able to see the footage on your digital video recorder from a remote location. The digital video recorder will be able to keep the surveillance footage for a specified length of time, which is going to vary, based upon the initial setup instructions.

Imagine, a young mother coming home late on a moonless night with her young children. As she hears a strange noise, she quickly monitors the home’s security camera from her smartphone. On the phone, she sees that there are three burglars in her home. She quickly calls the authorities who apprehend the criminals red handed. Even though the home was located in the country, without any available lighting, the security camera was still able to operate, thanks, to infrared illuminators.

Some experts would argue that infrared cameras are not the way to go, because these systems only record in black and white. We would argue that it is far better to have a security camera that operates in black and white, than no security camera at all. Most security cameras rely on available lighting to work. After all, many details are still viewable in black and white, such as car license plates and a basic description of the criminals.

The infrared illuminators work for only a few feet. When more than one infrared illuminator is grouped together the bank of light produced by the infrared illuminators can last up to four years before it needs to be replaced.
Infrared illuminators depend on LEDs to work. These LEDs are very energy efficient. Each LED gives off more light per watt than a traditional light bulb. The illuminators come in different strengths. Choose a strength that is right for your security camera and your situation. As darkness sets in the LED comes on very quickly. In fact, the red infrared illuminator comes on in under one microsecond. Since LEDs are cool light, the heat from the light will not harm other components of the system. LEDs seldom fail all at one time. Instead, they slowly go dimmer. The LED can easily be focused. It is very hard to hurt the LED light.

Security cameras with infrared illuminators come in several different styles. One of the most popular is the dome style. These half circle cameras are easy to disguise and will go unnoticed by most occupants of a room. Buyers need to be aware that when infrared illuminators are used indoors, there should be less than 12 illuminators. When more than 12 lights are present, the image becomes washed out, because the light bouncing off of objects in the room. It is important to remember that glossy paint reflects the infrared illuminator very well. This reflection will cause the video to appear washed out.

Another popular style of security cameras with infrared illuminators is the box style. Many users love their security cameras with infrared illuminators because they can be equipped with many different lenses. One possible choice is the wide-angle lens that allows viewing of a larger area. Another choice is a zoom lens. These lenses allow the viewer to zoom into a situation that they want to see closer. Pan, tilt and zoom Security cameras with infrared illuminators are popular. With these cameras, the user can pan the camera left or right, tilt the camera up or down or zoom the camera in to see a situation closer. Box cameras are not weatherproof, but many housing options exit. When using infrared illuminators outside it is important to remember that the temperature should be between 14 degrees Fahrenheit and 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

When you take the proper care and maintenance of your camera you will achieve the highest level of picture quality, as well as an extended life of your camera lens. If you don’t take care of your camera lens properly, you can expect to spend a small fortune having to get a new one. Once you have learned the proper ways to be able to clean your camera lens you will be able to rest assured that it will remain in perfect condition for years to come.

The Proper Lens Cleaning Tools

A cleaning solution is an absolute necessity for cleaning your camera lens. One of the soft cloths, such as a microfiber one, will work the best out of all the alternatives because it will not leave any scratch marks on the lenses. If there are any dust particles on the lenses, you need a lens blower that has a brush attachment to help eliminate any of the excess dust particles from the lens. Cotton swabs have been a great tool for cleaning around the edge of the camera lens, as well as absorbing any excess solution that has burrowed into the crevices.

Techniques for Cleaning

1. Start off with a lens-cleaning blower, which can be found in just about any of the lens cleaning kits, to help blow away any of the excess dirt and debris on the camera lens.
2. Softly brush away any of the remaining dirt and dust with a lens brush.
3. Using one of the soft cloths you have you need to wipe the lens gently using short strokes.
4. If there are any smudges that remain, you can apply a small amount of the lens solution onto the cloth and then wipe the lens gently to eliminate all of the smudged areas.
5. Last, take a cotton swab and go around the outside of the lens to be able to absorb any of the remaining solution.

Prevention is Key

You are not going to be able to prevent any dirt from gathering on the camera lens, but you can make sure that you are doing your part to be able to protect it as much as possible. Installing a UV filter on the lens will help to prevent a lot of the dust from getting into the camera and causing any problems. Place the filter in the front of the camera lens to be able to catch just about everything that comes along and prevent any smudging from occurring. The less that you have to mess with your camera, the better it will be in the long run. You can help extend the life expectancy of your camera with the proper care and preventative measures. It is up to you to take control of the situation and make sure that your camera can operate at its full potential without having to worry about a lot of the dust and dirt from ruining the camera lens.
